| In North-West Romania, aside the cities, there are some of the most unaltered regions. So, for instance, the endless forests but also the villages with high wooden churches, which remind of Scandinavia.
Characteristic for Maramureş are the beautiful sculpted wooden gates,
the colorful traditional costumes, still worn, and the peaceful, hectic-free
life of the people, a piece of lost Paradise.
Programme:
1st day: Bucharest
Arrival on the Otopeni Airport and transfer to Sibiu.
2nd day: Sibiu - Baia Mare
A short walking tour of the centre of Sibiu, with the Bruckenthal Museum. Drive through Sebeş and Alba Iulia, one of the most important towns for all Romanians to Cluj, Transylvania's Capital City. Further to Baia Mare. Accommodation: Hotel in Baia Mare.
3rd day: Surdeşti and Rohia Monastery
After breakfast, enough time to discover the region of Maramureş with its big forests. We shall visit the well-conserved wooden churches of Plopiş and Surdeşti and find out about the Greek-Catholics, Christians, who were not allowed to practise during the communist era. In villages, imaginative sculpted gates and wooden houses. A short trip leads to the Rohia Monastery, the refuge of a famous dissident. Accommodation: Hotel in Baia Mare.
4th day: The Jolly Cemetery and Sighet
A particularity of this region is the Jolly Cemetery in Săpânţa, near the border to the Ukraine. On request, we will visit the well-known prison in Sighet, now museum, where some of Romania's most important politicians and personalities were imprisoned by communists. Accommodation: Hotel in Sighet.
5th day: Iza Valley
Visiting a fantastic private art collection near Sighet. Drive through the Iza-valley with its famous wooden churches. Walking possibilities between the beautiful churches of Ieud and Botiza. Accommodation: Hotel in Vişeu.
6th day: Forest train and great landscapes
From Vişeu, the newly refurbished steam powered train leads through the big forests. Picnic and walking in the paradise-like mountain scenery. Accommodation in Botiza, in a nice pension.
7th day: Vişeu - Sighişoara
Heading southwards, we reach Eastern Transylvania, a region inhabited by szekly, one of the Hungarian minorities in Romania. In Târgu Mureş, we shall visit the Teleki Library and the Palace of Culture. Further to Sighişoara, where we shall visit the medieval citadel. Accommodation: Hotel in Sighişoara.
8th day: Sighişoara - Bucharest
Transfer to the airport.
Number of participants: at least 2.
Traveldates: Saturday-Saturday.
Duration: our standard programme is eight days long, but other durations are available on request.
