Day 1. Arrival and transfer to Sinaia on Prahova Valley (BLD)

Welcome to Romania! After clearing customs we’re picked up at Bucharest’s Otopeni Airport and driven to our hotel in the town of Sinaia in Romania’s Prahova Valley http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinaia, famous for its vineyards and ski resorts. This evening we gather for a welcome dinner with our tour leader and an orientation on our upcoming adventure.

 

Day 2. Hike in the Bucegi Mountains (BL)

Today we take a cable car high into the Bucegi Mountains for a day hike on the windswept Bucegi Plateau. This area is said to have been sacred to the ancient Dacians, ancestors of modern Romanians, and rock formations like the Sphinx and the Old Women that we see were landmarks before the birth of Christ. After our hike we drive to the historic city of Brasov for the evening.

Day 3. Biking deep into Transilvania to Rural Villages

This morning we tour the Transilvanian city of Brasov, one of the great cultural and trading centers of Romania, and then visit the medieval fortified church at Harman. A Roman style basilica with gothic elements, it was first built in response to the Mongol invasions of 1241. Throughout the tour we visit some of the best examples of Romania’s renowned fortified churches http://www.pbase.com/bauer/fortified_churches. These monuments to faith and war were built between the 13th and 16th centuries by Saxon immigrants from Germany and have become icons of Romanian cultural history. Seven are now listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites.

After our cultural excursions we’re off on our bikes deep into the Transilvania countryside to rural villages where we experience the traditional hospitality of the Romanian people. But don’t let them bite your neck !

Day 4. Biking to the Birthplace of “Dracula”

We continue across Transilvania on our bikes past timeless villages and fortified churches to http://www.romaniatourism.com/sighisoara.html, the town of Sighisoara, considered by many the most beautiful and well preserved medieval citadel in all Europe that’s still inhabited today. The hilly streets within its fortress display the essence of Saxon architecture in Transilvania and the jumble of pinnacles, battlements, steep red roofs and signature Clock Tower gives the town an unmistakable silhouette.Sighisoara is also the reputed birth place of Vlad Ţepeş (the Impaler) or Dracula (son of the Dragon) in 1431, the namesake of Bram Stoker’s vampire “Count Dracula”.

Day 5. Bike over Transilvanian Plateau to Sibiu

After some morning sightseeing we’re off on our bikes across the rural countryside to Sibiu http://www.romaniatourism.com/sibiu.html, the largest medieval city in Transilvania and the European Capital of Culture in 2007.

Sibiu was the largest and wealthiest citadel of the Transilvania Saxons. Many of its historic homes are painted in a variety of colors and feature attic windows that look like squinting eyes.

Days 6-7. Bike & Hike Fagaras Mountains, Hotel & Guesthouse

Today we enter the heart of the Carpathians and the rugged Fagaras Mountains. At Balea Lake (6700’) we hike through stunning alpine country and if we’re lucky, we may spot chamois, the wild goat of the Carpathians, scrambling among the crags. Next day we bike down from the mountains and ride on through picturesque villages to the town of Zarnesti and Piatra Craiului (King’s Rock) National Park http://www.pcrai.ro/engleza/parcul_istoric.html. The park protects the Piatra Craiului Mountain range, a narrow, saw-like ridge 15 miles long and up to 7400’ high considered one of the most dramatic and wildest parts of the Carpathians.

Bike up to 48 miles, paved roads (van supported)

 

Day 8. Hike in Piatra Craiului National Park

Today is full of options! We can hike in the majestic Piatra Craiului through a gorge where part of the movie Cold Mountain was filmed. Or kayak a scenic river, try the new adventure sport of canyoning (a combination of hiking, climbing, and swimming), mountain bike, rock climb or watch European brown bears (cousins of the American grizzly) in the wild. It’s up to you! You can choose your activity on the tour or before your departure. One activity is included in your tour price. Time permitting more activities can be done at extra cost.

Kayaking - Class II-IV depending on conditions

Rock Climbing - learn to climb or test your self on advanced routes

Canyoning – explore river canyons using wet suits and ropes; you can also body surf the rapids!

Mountain Biking – dirt roads and single track

Day 9. Hike to Dracula Castle

This morning we visit Bran Castle famous as Dracula’s Castle. https://www.google.com/search?q=bran+castle; Although never the residence of Vlad Dracula, he did use it as a fortress and may have spent two days in its dungeon hiding from invading Ottoman Turks. It later became the home of Romanian royalty and is now a museum.

After our castle tour we explore the picturesque villages in the area by foot, talking with locals and sampling the local cuisine, including Romania’s traditional polenta and melted cheese made fresh with organic produce from neighboring farms.

Day 10. Transfer to Bucharest – the Romanian's Capital

This morning we drive back to Bucharest with a stop to visit the “Pearl of the Carpathians”, Peles Palace http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pele%C5%9F_Castle, the magnificent hunting preserve and summer retreat of King Carol I of Romania. We then continue to Bucharest for an afternoon tour of the city. This evening we’re treated to a Romanian folklore show and farewell dinner.

Day 11. Trip Conclusion

The morning is yours to enjoy before your transfer to Bucharest airport for flights home.
